The government of the Western Cape has plans to establish a R1-billion halaal agri-processing
food park to capitalise on the multitrillion-dollar global halaal market. The park will be a cluster
of manufacturing and service firms in the halaal industry.
Construction on the Gibela industrial complex in Gauteng is to begin later this year, says the rail
transport consortium. Once fully operational, it will produce 62 trains a year. Local suppliers are
crucial, and the facility will help to spark industrial growth in the region.
Long-time friends Thato Kgatlhanye and Rea Ngwane have come up with an idea to make life
easier for children in poor communities: bags made from upcycled shopping bags that
have built-in solar technology. The bag charges up in the day, and transforms into a light at night.
South Africa's high rate of unemployment, poverty and extreme inequality call for bold and far-
sighted interventions, Small Business Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu told the Global
Entrepreneurship Congress in Milan, Italy, last week.
